7 Dangers in the Cloud Campus Technology (12/01/10)

Swidler, Adam There are a number of security threats associated with cloud computing, according to the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA). One such threat is the use of infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS) technologies to launch attacks such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks as well as attempts to crack passwords and CAPTCHAs. CSA says several steps can be taken to deal with the use of cloud computing technologies for malicious purposes, including implementing more stringent registration and validation processes, monitoring network traffic to detect evidence of abuse, and observing public blacklists to ensure that a cloud provider's address is not blocked. Another threat comes from a cloud provider's employees, who may be able to access a customer's data for malicious purposes. CSA says organizations can mitigate the threat from malicious insiders by enforcing strict supply chain management practices and by conducting thorough supplier assessments. Such assessments should look at the hiring practices and policies used by the cloud provider. Finally, organizations that use cloud computing providers could have their accounts broken into by attackers, who in turn could manipulate data and direct users to illegitimate sites, among other things. Cloud users can protect themselves by not sharing account login information with different users, and by not using the same login information for two different services, CSA says.
